There is a rather new addon out there, called Archaeology Helper (http://wow.curse.com/downloads/wow-addons/details/arh.aspx).
I pretty much gave up after I had all achievements, but now it makes archaeology alot less time consuming.
I used Gathermate2 before, but this helps even more.

You need Gathermate2 (http://wow.curse.com/downloads/wow-addons/details/gathermate2.aspx) and Gathermate2data (http://wow.curse.com/downloads/wow-addons/details/gathermate2_data.aspx) to be able to use the HUD.

How do the addon work?
Pretty much a triangulation addon, but it adds zones, red is ofc all from X to within the borders, but yellow will have a solid zone with limitations, same with green, but smaller.
Well, you simply already have all digspots from GatherMate.
When you survey you either get red/yellow or green. Whatever color you get, point your character in that direction and click the same button.
You will now get a red/yellow or green zone. If there only is one digpoint, then that's the one, even if your survey was red.
If you get 2 red, they will overlap eachother, just get the digspot within (happends alot).

Before this I probably spent 2-6 surveys for each point, now I'm probably down to 3, top and many cases I get it on second already.

So there's your little buff for your really rare ones, hehe.

(Also, in next patch you won't be able to stack unlimited fragments, cap will ge at 200. So start farm now, if you're focusing for something).

Only used the Archaeology helper a few hours. Only downside is if you get a digpoint that is not in the database. But it saves it for next time so you'll find it then.
But coming from someone that probably done about 20k+ fragments, get this addon! So much worth it, probably saves you 30% of the time spent.

Gathermate2 data wasnt right, so added the whole addon instead. Should work for anyone that add these 3 addons now.

I just added gathermate2_data from curse :-)

using the (auto)import function from gathermate, worked briliantly :-) Did get some missing nodes, but that is cool :-)

How do you like that addon then? To me...that was really dead on archaeology...I love it! :D On my way to my second 525, hehe. But this time I've saved all my trolls! :) Got only 1000 now tho. :S He is a mage, so he will be my main archaeologist from now.

I personally use "Archy" and "TomTom" for ease and no need for gathermate really.

no need to keep checking map for next dig, the tomtom arrow will point you to the next closest dig site, just follow the arrow and survey away, it also has a range finder for "green , yellow and red" distances and also tracks nodes

(in case you misunderstood, I dont mean digsites, I mean within the digstites)

Do not even sound close to as good as what I have. I've let 2 friends use it, both of them had "Archy", and both said the same "Damn, this addon is AWSOME!". Gettind a direction and "dot" where it possibly may be isnt as good as having zones overlapping eachothers.
I mean, what addon can really beat 2 red surveys turn into exact location at third survey?
When you have one addon tracking each dig-point and one addon zooning them in, with overlapping...it's more like dual-angulation than triangulation...if something like dual-angulation exist, hehe.
I mean, I just had a survey that pointed outside the zone...and had only one single dot within the zone. Your addons would place you either left or right, right? All I did was to go to the point, survey, and there it was. Simple as.

It might help make the whole thing a tiny bit easier, but it still remains more boring that even fishing..... :(
