Just wondering what free software (freeware or open source, doesn't matter) the people on Shadowsong use.
For me, the free software that I tend to use often are:

AVG is fucking shit!!! burn it with fire!!!!
ESET Smart Security! (Nod32)

Nod32 isn't free though (at least last time I checked)?
But I agree with not liking AVG. Free AV-wise, I'd prefer Avast or Avira, Avast is less annoying.
Adding to the list though:
VLC player (aka Video LAN)

CCCP, COmbined Cummunity Codec Pack
Windows Live Messenger *yugh, but ohwell* (I hate the 2011 version!, WLM9 is ok)
Windows Live Messenger Plus
A-Patch for WLM
Chrome, Firefox, Thunderbird.

Adobe Flash / Shockwave players
The rest is paid for or comes complimentory from Microsoft

All of my back-up copies of somebody else's legally-purchased DVDs:
Mozilla Firefox, obviously.
Auslogics Disk Defrag
Random utility programs (ImgBurn, Winamp, VLC, iTunes for managing iPod, Limewire)

VLC, plays stuff that WMP cries about.
CCleaner along with S&D.
Things I can do without but have to have are
iTunes for me podcasts
Adobe Acrocrap which keeps popping up even when I turn off auto updates.

Completely offtopic, but are things like CCCP really needed anymore ? I have yet to find/download something which couldnt be viewed by vlc.

problem with VLC is that it uses software rendering. It can't use hardware (NVIDIA Cuda for example)
Therefor it is rather slowish with larger files/heavy compression/blueray-alike files.(Compared to hardware-rendered stuff)
MPC can use hardware to render stuff, thus it is faster, but it needs the codecs.

Adobe's stuff (Acrobat, Flash, etc), Netbeans, Notepad++, putty &co
X-fire, Ventrillo, TS2/3, Skype, Steam
K-Lite Codec Pacs + MPC (WMP too, as it remembers screen on which it's set up)
If you count Giveway of the Day editions, then Process Lasso and Deamon Tools Pro too.
