The influx of 'Get into Cataclysm alpha' videos will really start appearing on Youtube now. Sadly some will fall for it and get fucked over.

So bets for how long the beta will be?

Beta in April, release in July.

Hey, I made this chart. Question marks are where I don't have the exact date. I'll adjust the chart if someone wants to dig up the exact dates. Alpha here means the "family & friends" alpha.
TBC alpha August (8.) 23.? 2006
beta October (10.) 01.? 2006, 39 days from alpha
rel January (1.) 16. 2007, 107 days from beta

WOTLK alpha May (5.) 17.? 2008
beta July (7.) 17.? 2008, 61 days from alpha
rel November (11.) 13. 2008, 119 days from beta, 667 days from TBC

CATA alpha January (1.) 12.? 2010
beta March (3.) 01.? 2010, 48 days from alpha
rel August (8.) 03.? 2010, 155 days from beta, 628 days from WOTLK
Cataclysm dates are obviously my guesses.

Why longer time between Cataclysm alpha and beta?
- I don't think it will be finished before summer starts because the expansion is huge. There will be a lot of new content AND a lot of the old content is changed (1-60 leveling, every talent tree for every class)
- Summer is sucky time to release games. Early August is certainly summer still and it wouldn't surprise me if the release was even later.
- Maybe I'm wrong. Have to see in what state the alpha is!

Few more interesting numbers if we guess that the expansion is released Aug 3rd 2010:

Last Sunwell gate opened in first US realm May 20th, 2008. (first Kil'jaeden kill was May 24th 2008)
That left 177 days of final boss time until expansion.

Lich King is predicted to be available February 2nd, 2010.
That would leave 182 days of final boss time until expansion. (or minus 7 days for hard mode)

I don't think Blizzard would be too worried about people running out of raiding content. Majority of the guilds will take their sweet time to even reach hard mode Lich King.

Just for completeness' sake; 40-man Naxxramas opened June 20th, 2006. (first Kel'Thuzad kill was September 7th 2006)
It was open 241 days until expansion but not a lot of guilds had progressed enough to spend a lot of time in there.

Latest rumours (http://agencynews.wordpress.com/2010/01/20/news-may-release-for-cataclysm-3d-armory/) are for a May(ish) release.

Amazon (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B002MPPSGW?ie=UTF8&tag=loadedinc-21&linkCode=xm2&camp=1634&creativeASIN=B002MPPSGW) already has the pre order page up. Interesting price!

17 quid isn't bad, probably worth ordering at that as it's likely to go up closer to the release date. I've been saying since the announcement it'd be around April, I won't be joining you but I do want lots of pictures and videos!

You won't be joining?! Gobbos in 'Wacky Races' Cars? What's not to love?!

I am pretty certain that Blizzard is trying to chip in a release before the summer due to the smacking they got between SWP and WotLK release. Will they deliver? Who knows.

So maybe the safe bet is August but...I will go for a high risk bet and state a June release :p

I'm still partial to a later date really, but if it has to be 'earlier', I'd guess at July. Sure, a June date wouldn't stop anyone playing, but I'd hope they'd have some compassion about the exam dates that probably hit quite a lot of their userbase in that month :P

Exam dates the same globally? If so, interesting point.

Now that you mention it I have absolutely no idea. I'm not exactly sure what to search for to try and find out either.

I'll shift my guesstimate to May.

Well, the 'The Shattering: Prelude to Cataclysm' book has a (preliminary) date of August.
Now, I know Arthas came out quite a bit after the expansion and was considered to be the WotLK tie in book (even though the next one there is Malfurion one which might sort of make it into a 'convenient' release of the first in a series of 'important person' books instead?) but last time I checked Cataclysm was meant to be multiple books (a trilogy?) on the specific subject of the cataclysm, so I'd like to think that at least the first one shouldn't have that sort of delay this time around :x

"Family & friends" alpha testing finally started.
I predict that the release date of Cataclysm will be October 26, 2010; based on previous alpha/beta cycles and troll voodoo magic. August release or earlier is out of the question.

Weird, thread on Hive forum predicts the exact same date :P
