Well Jurg, I lived in Australia for years and that's not like any Bird Eating Spider i've seen before. They are bigger and more hairy.

Looks like an Orb Weaver, long thin legs, saclike abdomen, joint head/thorax (cephalothorax). Not sure on the colours though.

Very similar to an Orb Weaver but I'm thinking along the lines of a the family of Dysderidae (cell spiders), but the colours are strange; that said I don't really know about spids. They tend to hang about under rocks and in and around houses, have a unpleasant bite (not deadly by any means) and will go RAWR if you piss one off.

This is the fucker you want to avoid

It's small, hides in a really shitting looking web and can kill. They run single threads of their web down to the floor beneath their nest, these are like traps to any unsuspecting creature. once the Red Back feels the vibration it runs down the web, bites its prey to immobilize it. The side effect to the bite is it is deadly to humans, you need to be treated with an anti venom. Also they don't all have the red stripe, be aware of things with big butts...

My brother-in-law got bitten on the balls by one last year. Got to a hospital but he was in agony.
