That's right, I am blatantly copying the idea of one of the best threads on SSE, which obviously is Akrea's What are you listening to-thread.

I have discovered quite a few great bands from there and nowadays every time I see certain people posting who's bands/songs I have either found interesting or who's musical taste is similar to mine, I know I'm getting my time's worth when I click on their links (thanks Thordyn!). Ideally this thread could serve the same purpose for people, even though on a much smaller scale. Alternatively one can use this thread as a way to promote the games he/she likes, and possibly to get people to join you in playing them.

What and how you decide to post is up to you but naturally the better general view you manage to give from the game, the easier it gets for people to get excited about the game. And yes, I agree that the lazy bastards should just google for the information but you know how it is.

Anyway, the first game for me in this thread is Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos and it's expansion The Frozen Throne. Most of you know this game and I won't babble about it, just mentioning that I'm playing it in battlenet, generally 1vs1 matches but occasionally 2vs2 & 3vs3 arranged team matches as well.

Here's something useful, which might contain stuff you don't know if you have only played single player campaigns or such.

And here's a few reviews, just for nostalgy's sake.

I was playing W3:RoC but my head got distracted by a huge fleet of battlecruisers dropping out of warp and shouting 'Oi you, play Sins of a Solar Empire' so I did and it's good! Now if only I could get it on my iPhone I'd be heaven!

Mostly trials and demos.

Age of Conan had a trial download now ... fun for a while but didn't get me hooked.
Dungeons and Dragons now free to play ... more fun than AoC at least ... should have been like this on release.
<Chronicles of Spellborn> (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0zayiqOX_5I) has been free to play for a while now and I've been playing it once or twice a week ... nice no pressure kinda game.
Wolfenstein demo ... hmm *shrug*
Oh and the <Love> (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zx5uuD6pLRc) alpha for the heck of it ... no sound yet, bugs and glitches, resets ever so often, but still pretty entertaining for an hour or two at a time.

I used to play Freelancer online a lot but when MS removed server support we struggled to get a server running again. Spent ages pissing off IMG, running Cardamine from one system to another, parking at New York and trying to outrun Liberty Police who took it upon themselves to 'check my cargobay for contraband'. Miss them days a lot, here's hoping Jumpgate Evo's worth this tiresome wait. *gone off topic, sorry*

I remember playing the demo for Freelancer; was totally captivated by how awesome New Manhattan looked. Still remember tingly feeling when I first got into the Starflier and was flung into space watching this gigantic ship fly past the space station. First space ship fight about 5 seconds later felt truly epic :p Trying to keep close to the space station so I wouldn't get blown to bits. If only I'd known even the wimp Starflier can take on anything in the demo no problem I might not have enjoyed it as much :p

Now on my 5th playthrough and still love just looking at the beautiful environments (especially New Tokyo), or just picking a fight on some moron pirates.

Didn't know they had MMO in development either; played multiplayer quite a bit while the servers were official and modified ones after Microsoft took down support. Always felt that if it had more people playing it'd be really amazing, I mean apart from a few systems rest of the universe was empty and trading commodities from one place to another didn't really appeal to me.

Just took a look at Jumpgate and it looks pretty damn amazing. Don't know if it'll live up to Freelancer but seeing as there isn't that much competition in space simulators at the moment maybe it will. Can't get worse than Darkstar One anyway (lawl).

Next up, a game I've been playing for the last 15 years:

Ancient Domains Of Mystery

A quote from the developer himself:

Ancient Domains of Mystery (ADOM for short) is a roguelike game which means that it is a single-user game featuring the exploration of a dungeon complex (and in the case of ADOM a few other games of this genre: the exploration of a large wilderness area with villages and many special locations). You control a fictional character described by race, class, attributes, skills, and equipment. This fictional character is trying to achieve a specific goal (see below) and succeed in a difficult quest. To fulfill the quest, you have to explore previously undiscovered tunnels and dungeons, fight hideous monsters, uncover long forgotten secrets, and find treasures of all kind.

So far this might sound like many other computer roleplaying games like Diablo, The Bard's Tale or Ultima.

1. There are two major differences to roguelike games though: most roguelike games do not use any graphics but rather rely on the ASCII character set to display their surroundings.
While this might sound horrible to you, you will be surprised how quickly you start to enjoy this "primitive" type of display. Your imagination quickly will take over and you'll no longer miss those ugly hand-drawn graphical tiles that do not resemble your picture of a dragon at all. But in your imagination, that blue D will soon become the most horrible and frightening ice wyrm you can imagine. Try it out. You won't be disappointed.
A side effect of this "graphical style" is that you won't need to download much. Roguelike games are pretty small because most of their code is concerned with a very intense sort of gameplay and not some ugly graphics quickly becoming out of date. In that respect many roguelike games are far superior to commercial roleplaying games (did I forget to mention that? Most roguelike games are available for free!)
2. Roguelike games are very random. While almost all of them have a background for the gameplay, the dungeons, villages and other locations in the game are randomly created anew for each game. This offers a never-ending challenge as each dungeon will be different and there (almost) is no tedious "Let's try this dungeon for the twentieth time... how boring since I know all the tunnels".
3. Roguelike games usually do not allow you to save your character past his/her death. While this might seem overly harsh at first, you will quickly discover that this provides a level of tension unheard of in commercial games. Every decision is importand and it's a lot more exciting to explore unknown terrain, if you know that death is final.

If you've never tried a roguelike game, you should do now. You most probably will never regret it!

Mandatory Wikipedialink: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ancient_Domains_of_Mystery

And a screenshot of course:
http://img227.imageshack.us/img227/1391/adom1iw4.png

If you're going to try it out, don't expect it to be easy if you haven't played any roguelike games before. My advice would be to hit the ?-button immediately after starting the game as it opens up the list for keyboard controls and after a year of playing you MIGHT be able to finish it.

Just want to /sign the above. Best computer game for me in a long long time.

Bought it and as expected really like it.

Somehow I like Mass Effect better so far though. I don't like it when the main character is silent like it also was in KOTOR. Mass Effect also made the typical Bioware astounding amount of dialogue more interesting as you only choose the direction of where you wanted the conversation to go and Shepard then fleshed it out. Matter of taste i suppose. I also liked it that the codex in Mass Effect was spoken with a really cool voice, and the awesome filler animations like when you went through a mass effect relay, and the star system map, the great ambient music, the shooter combat with cover system, the hot blue alien chick, the cool amazing plot twist etc etc. Only thing I really didn't like with Mass Effect was the boring exploration of the uncharted worlds, but I guess someone without gamer OCD like me wouldn't cover every square inch of each planet before they were satisfied...

Oh, and spectres are really just grey wardens in space. The intro I played so far as human noble was veeeery similar to the Mass Effect intro. Promising grunt meets master from mysterious order and go on a test mission together, betrayal ensues and master dies and grunt gets included in the order because there's no one else etc.

It's positive that the battles get pretty challening early but I think I made a mistake picking a tank as a main character as theres plenty of tanks in the party but not a lot of healers or dps. Oh well, final battles will be crap but next playthrough I'll get it right.

I don't like the gift system. Especially because it seems to rely on a lot of trial and error and quicksaves which detracts from the flow of the game. I mean, how are you gonna get into the fabled foursome later on if you dont get all the gifts right, am I right?

Anywho. I really like it ;-)

DA:O is amazing. Reminds me alot of the KOTOR games, which imho where better then Mass Effect. sure, ME was a good game, but DA:O is better still. The companions are more fleshed out and far more memorable then any others in a game that I have played before, right along with Final Fantasy games and Baldurs Gate. I have allready spent 40 hours with the game and I suspect I am 3/4ths done by now. Just an estimate, maybe even less to go to finish it.

Hey Nimbus, let me know if you can scrounge up enough talents on your tank to change him into a DPS warrior with equipment change =P

Otherwise next playthrough will be with a caster

I finished the game after around 50 hours but only had 75% complete. Awesome game, love the part Sandal has at the end, won't ruin the fun by saying it though xP

Anyways some rather good/helpful/necessary addons for the game:

http://social.bioware.com/project/463/ Storage chest for your camp.

http://social.bioware.com/project/469/ Character respec potion incase you screwed up. Also helpfully put one outside Morrigan's place so you can get her out of the stoopid shapeshifter spec.

http://social.bioware.com/project/561/ Decent faces for Morrigan and Leliana

http://dragonagenexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=28 Autolewts

http://dragonagenexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=42 Changes stats on some of the items cause there's no curve atm and you end up vendoring 90% of the crap you find (not used it myself but will do next playthrough)

http://dragonagenexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=15 HD textures (wewt)

http://social.bioware.com/project/428/ VEEEERRY important for rogues, fixes a bug where dexterity was meant to be included with STR for dmg but they left it out, there's another fix linked on the page that fixes both daggers and bows but fixes the damage for enemies aswell, so in fights with many archers it gets quite a bit more difficult. Stick to just the dagger one if you're having trouble on normal/easy.

Plenty more mods on the sites but these are some of the better finished ones. Here's to hoping they finish the BG2 remake with the DA:O engine.

EDIT:

I'm at Galaxy radio about to find a dish, 'Following in his footsteps' I think it's called. I have noticed that the game's opening up a bit at a time. I couldn't wait to get to the Washington Monument so used the Noclip cheat to find it, was just a pointy thing in the middle of nothing, so I'm guessing the game puts more and more in as you progress. It's much much better than Half-Life 1 and 2 ever were, it even eclipses Farcry which was the last game to make me go 'fuck me!'.

Found my first wormhole last night. Part of me wanted to go in, the other part was scared. The non-wuss part of me went in and then promptly shat itself in 0.0 space. Images are clickable *hugs forum setup*.

http://img163.imageshack.us/img163/858/200912252051.jpg

I then did some more scans and found a place full of harvestable gas clouds, deep in hi sec space. Along side those was a huge abandoned space mining facility and a shedload of ore! I was tempted to pewpew it to bits but it wouldn't let me *sad panda*

Closer view.

Moo.

I have been told I 'need' to buy Left 4 Dead 2 but I'm not hugely sure I'll play it much, hence I'm after the demo. It seems Valve stopped the demo some time back, even via Steam, so i'm hoping there's another way of getting it. I checked the usual Torrent sites but it seems installation is a pain in the ass - suggestions would be welcome :)

Still playing Dragon Age, second playthrough. Somehow Nightmare mode seems far too easy. Heard some people are soloing the whole game with other three party members naked and on hold/passive.

Have Modern Warfare 2 and Assassin's Creed 2 unopened in bookshelf but question if I will play them before I get my hands on either Mass Effect 2 or Bayonetta (rawr)

Oh god I know. First two times I played it it just seemed like utter shite but this time I fully intended to give it a proper go. It's so bloody complex, with so much to learn that it'll keep me busy for a while yet.

On a related gaming note; picked up Modern Warfare 2 and oh dear god I'm still coming down. The visuals are amazing, the gameplay is frantic and the set pieces brilliantly done. Sure the story is about as well written as a Peter and Jane book but that is overshadowed massively by the game itself.

Started Phantasy Star Zero (for DS) at the beginning of December before I managed to lose it somewhere by the wayside.
Picked it up again yesterday and today. It would be more fun if I could get the wireless to work with WPA or if the party ai for npcs wasn't completely awful, but its still fun :)

I get the impression playing a Fomarl as a ranged gun/cannon class isn't quite intended going by the crap damage (and the fact she's meant to be a force), but basic Force use only hits nearby stuff, which sorta sucks. I don't want to be a melee force. She's fragile :(
PP also seems to vanish very, very quickly and monofluid isn't dropping as often as I'd like... and when compared to the fact guns have unlimited ammo it sort of feels silly.

Probably switching back to my Hunewm or Racaseal instead for now though.

DA:O Is fucking awesome, although im finding it a little bit too easy on Hard in my current playthrough. With a decent enough team setup and tactics i'm still able to basically just play my main PC (berserker/reaver) and just dick stuff in the face with my axe without having to switch characters much.

Just received Mass Effect today and i'm already loving it.

Still massively enjoying MW2, and my aim's slowly improving. I was getting Price out of the Gulag last night and bloody hell that got tense. Sat in that room with Ghost trying to get a door open, me dodging from side to side and hiding behind a riot shield. Also spending some time still in Left 4 Dead 2, it's great fun for just a romp around if you have some spare time. Made a small video on Fraps, first section (before the fire section in the Hotel), uploaded to Youtube with just game sounds and yes my aim sucks.

Just finished Assassin's Creed 2. Not bad, better than the first although better facial animations would have matched the high quality of all other graphics better.

If I had ever played a Grand Theft Auto game longer than 15 minutes I guess I might appreciate the whole sandbox thing more. I was never very "gangsta", more of a medieval assassin at heart I guess, whatever that means.

And with 98/100 feathers collected, somewhere in the huge town of Venice, two feathers are hiding. Not enough of an achievement/trophy whore to go aimlessly looking for them, or maybe I will after my 5th or so playthrough of ME2 :-)

IDK, gonna try again after getting home. To see from what point on I can (quick) save. Because it was either not working or not enabled yet in that stage of the game. As in* too early *

What I did like btw, is that the first time that I died, my team mates were still alive. And I had the option to resume. But they sadly died too on the last mob that was still alive. I wondered what would happen when they got out of combat. Res me? (I could also control them).

Also, the controls for moving your squad around are far better now. using Q and E to move either member A or B. So no more pressing space, moving camera, point, click on *move you there* and *move you there*.
Way faster paced. I also like the run-duck-slide-hide-spacebar-combo :P

Loving Mass Effect 2. Except for the planet scanning mini games. How the HELL did that get through play testing? First time its fun and for the other 99 planets to scan it's a huge time sink with constant need to refill probe supply for every planet if you want to max out upgrades.

Atmosphere is really awesome and they put in so much work to make all environments look unique, at least so far. Think I have a small crush on both Miranda and my assistant, what will Liara say when I get to her? *Giddy laughter* Also nice not to have to have an Electronics and Decryption person in each squad setup but doing it personally through quite decent mini games. Not like the planet scanning minigame COS I HATE IT!!!

Flawless

I really enjoyed it, once you get some abilities and if you bother putting the effort into playing it on a harder difficulty it is very challenging (Hello Dwarven dungeons).

Trapsing through Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion at the moment, even haven't used a cheat yet! Normally the urge to get the biggest, most deadly weapon in the game has over taken me. Anyhoo joined the Dark Brotherhood and I'm also in the Thiefs(Thieves?) Guild, did my first few quests for the Dark Brotherhood last night. The most enjoyable one was entering the prison again, not being spotted by the guards, and assassinating a dark elf.

My only issues with the game are the ugly character faces and the terrible jumping animations; it's just not realistic at all.

Maybe I should try it again some time with the mods.

Judging by your post, you should be doing so already. 1.13 + HAM bring already so much to the game. Massive improvements to AI, real use for machineguns & covering fire as spraying around dramatically lowers the morale of the enemy, new inventory system, mobile militia, shitloads of weapons, changing weather, etc. And don't forget to customize the JA2_options.ini if you feel like getting even more out from the game (read it atleast if nothing else). Furthermore, if you decide to go with Wildfire, you can get the Alpha Item Mod, if you want to drown yourself in the sea of weapons & equipment.

Also, the game has nowadays multiplayer - though it's still in the making and a major part of it isn't working yet. Explosives/explosions aren't implemented, you cannot climb to roofs, martial arts & melee are bugged etc. So I'd wait a bit before testing it since the only thing that works properly at the moment is 1vs1 with basic firearms. :;v

P.S. Found the direct link I was looking for earlier: http://www.ja-galaxy-forum.com/board/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=211962&page=0

Think I've only played about 6 levels on each. And I really want to like it, but its just not there.

Shiverchill

I agree, storyline if RA3 was crap. C&C3 overall storyline was also weird, no argument there

However C&C4 is a culmination of all tiberium saga, including the legendary Tiberian sun. The storyline there would be epic (it better be!).

31st hour of my FF13 playthrough, side missions (which you need to do if you want to access the tier 3 weapons) and (annoying) exploration hit at the 11th Chapter. Slow until you get access to paradigms. Story is great, although it doesn't really pick up until chapter 9. Characters eventually get to the point where they aren't all assholes. First FF game I've played since 9 (and that was my first). Loving it alot.

I'm on FFXIII too. only at chapter 4 or 5.
My 1st FF was 9 aswel. think I replayed that 6 times or so just to get eveything in the game. 10 is really nice too after you get past the loads of talking at the start.

I just think the summons (Eidolons) in 13 look weird. Hope's Alexander looks bleh. Love the look of Alexander in 9. And Shiva's a motorbike O_o.

Completed it, 48 hours played. Ending is amazing and chapter 12 has what can only be described a CGI masturbation, it is amazing. Surprised this wasn't 9's and 10's in reviews linearity is only there for about half of the game and the story is really top notch. Not to mention the graphics if there was ever a real reason for HD its this.

Fucking love this game.

Just finished Heavy Rain, normal mode, after...er... 10 hours of nonstop playing >.>

I absolutely loved the game. I have to say, i was sceptical before i bought it, seeing how i wasnt in mood for philosophical-sadness-gripping-drama-whatsnot-thingy. Fucking hell, im really glad i bought it!

I would highly, highly recommend Heavy Rain to all people who own PS3 (unfortunately its PS3 exclusive, kinda same as halo series & xbo. Not even pc, only PS3. But if you are among the (true gamers, best of the best, the REAL console users) PS3 users, get this thing asap and indulge yourself.

Game starts kinda slow, maybe for an hour or so, just go with it - yes, its boring, it happens. But quite soon it picks up the pace and before you know it you just dont want to put the controller down.

Every decision you make changes the outcome. Did you decide to pick up that strange note under desk? If so, you might find a clue on the adress of that note and discover who bad guy is before he kills your friend. Or you could let your friend die. Or you could take your friend for a ride, so killer wouldnt be able to kill him at that time. Or you could accidently kill the killer.
^ This isnt the plot ofc, but it gives you the idea. Every action has consequences, and its very very enjoyable to play the game & unravel the plot. Who is the origami killer? Can you save the people you love?

TL : DR - Get this game. Period. Its worth it

On another note, finished Dawn of War 2: Chaos Rising. I would say its very small compared to its predecessor (like...er... 10 missions or so?), and the corruption thingy could have been explored a bit more. A good game to play, but imo not worth the full game price tag of £24.

I fell asleep playing Bioshock 2, doubt I will finish it. Started on FFXIII instead. Why is it they always have such strange names for things integral to storyline? fal Cie, Cie'eth etc etc. Really breaks the great voice acting apart from Vanille "Let's explore!! Teehee". They really put a lot of work into the graphics, but when you're just walking down a corridor from fight to fight it feels a bit wasted. Fight system is definitely best so far though. And have to agree that story so far is interesting. Waiting for the gameplay to open up a bit :-)

agree with you 110% bro, I started out online gaming way back with "CnC: Tiberium sun - Firestorm" then moved onto ra2 (although yuris was a bit of an abortion due to the piss poor side balance online)
Generals was pretty good as was tiberian wars, but ra3 for me was complete shite, and then when i got into the beta of CnC4 I was ecstatic.... that was untill I loaded it up and to my horror saw they had completely destroyed all resemblance of the previous CnC games played 2 games I think then uninstalled it.

TW games are awesome. Obviously just as platform for modders. Vanilla games usually are not worth more than 24-48 hours of gameplay. Well, maybe except Shogun since it was such a ground breaking game. For Rome get Europa Barbarorum. Simply the best, most deep mod ever made. M2... well plenty of decent mods. Empire - darthmod. Sadly stuff doesn't look too good with Napoleon atm as Darth refused to mod it if CA doesn't release mod tools.

You just have to get used to the fact that Empire and Napoleon are about rifles and cannons, which require different tactics than older TWs with swordsmen and bowmen :)

I find it completely impossible for me to go back to the older games now (got em all and havent even played some of em yet), the new gameplay just suits me more and that the graphics are prettier than the older games makes it even harder :)

Just played a game in Napoleon as Denmark (with the new startpos 'mods') and was ambushed by 2 large russian armies, and it was a real ambush so there wasnt any time to place your army. Just had my entire 3000+ men/horses/cannons in one straight line while the russians had an army on each of my sides, it quickly became a frantic and hectic fight while trying to get my army into some sort of decent fighting position.. It was awesome :D

I had quite some lan battles with RTW. Proper multiplayer was introduced with ETW, but with ETW vanilla being very poor I didn't really enjoy multiplayer aspect much except first couple battles. Too high kill ratio really butchered any kind of strategy beyond troop selection (or should I put it as "selection") and initial positioning imho.
Napoleon has quite better BAI and CAI but extremely high kill ratio is still there, so again multiplayer is not really a selling point to me. Anyways, haven't played Napoleon more than 24 hours, shelved it for later use with mods.

Well, yeah. Some of the games had pretty clumsy multiplayer. Iirc in Rome(?) the outcome of the battle was decided in the first clash as the morale had such a big role to play.

Also, writing in english seems to be a bit challenging when combined with a high fever so I'll leave a shorter reply this time even though the Total War-series could have used a bit more forum space in this thread.

Shiverchill
26-03-2010, 04:48 AM
Well you cant pirate it, due to game mechanics. And no, mine is from d2d, and im not sharing that account sorry. Either way, dont bother, really.

most probably they will release an expansion "Command and Conquer 4: Kane's Saga of the game that should have been released with main game but we were too greedy or lazy to do it", in which they will actually make it playable.

Right now?
1) Campaign - 5 missions (yes , 5) for each side.
2) Storyline that makes you want to hang yourself.
3) Gameplay that is based on "park your MCV near enemy base, queue 100000000 of the best units you can make, go afk".
4) Multiplayer is "control the base", no other choices, so the only way to win is to have 50 scouts running around map capturing points from enemy who does exactly the same - you dont even bother changing technology to higher units, you just build lowest-tech-fast-moving scouts and thats it.

In other news, playing FFXIII atm, on PS3.... Divine shit, really. (in a good sense!)
I havent played a game with such awesome graphics.... ever really. And i mean it - the graphics are absolutely stunning. Take Crysis at its release date, and multiply it by 3 or 4 or something. Yes, that cool. And the best thing is - there is NO loading or lagging of any kind. You just play - no loading screens (none at all. ever.), no "please wait for this level to load", no weird graphics lags/bugs. Its just perfect. I didnt know it could be like that

The gameplay itself is a bit unusual (for me), but i enjoy it & am now just at the start of 4th chapter. The storyline is very intriguing, and i really want to see how it plays out.
In short, highly recommend to anyone who owns PS3/Xbox.

Went with our alliance in a huge fleet operation to defend our systems, man the lag was immense. 400 enemy ships. 4 Titans, 4 Avatars, god knows what else! Never seen anything like it.

When we hit the home system it took a good 5 minutes to actually log into the node. Traffic warning went up and some of us were stuck at gates until we could jump. I was in a small Merlin as I don't have my Battlecruiser yet, and encountered quite a few who wanted to jump me - quite a nicely tanked Merlin, so I could get away with little trouble :)

I'm in there somewhere!

Vegelus
02-04-2010, 05:34 PM
Maybe it was changed some time ago, but when I've played it last time it still worked for your K:D ratio at least. And you still had those wins/looses in statistic.

Could be that then there was no ranking system yet?

Shiverchill
02-04-2010, 06:22 PM
Probably.
There are 4 types of games now:

Matchmaking: special Rating for matchmaking only, KD counts, Leaver counts
Public ranked: PSR, KD counts, Leaver counts
Public unranked: no PSR, no KD, but leaver still counts
Solo Unranked (training kinda): no PSR, no KD, no leaver.

There is also Tutorial (for newbies!).

So why why why WHY would a new player go into RANKED games? For his own sake!
When i just joined HoN my first like 50+ games were unranked just to understand the game mechanics etc. Thats just basic logic o.O

I dont mind people who play crap (well, yeah i do, but at least they know how to play). I however do mind joining a matchmaking game to find two people in my team dying to Kongor at level 1 because they didnt know there were enemy heroes to fight >.>

TBH there should be a rule that you cant join ranked game until say 25+ unranked games played or smth.

Finished FFXIII three weeks ago. Once all chars were maxed out in their three starting roles I never saw any reason to switch up the teams, was going with Vanille, Fang and Hope for 100% of the game once it was open choice. Didn't find it very challenging to be honest. Emerald and Ruby weapon anyone?
