THANK YOU! I've been looking for this game for absolutely ages and I just couldn't remember the name of it.

Edit: Actually it was Gradius I played when I was young... I remember those slanted stone faces. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Gradius_04.png

Kick Off 2! I must have played that game so much. Nothing took up my time more than that damn football game, it took some serious skill to play it well and I must have busted a good 5 joysticks over the course of a couple of years.

On my C64 it was called Salamander :P

If my memory serves me well, those were two completely different games, though obviously sharing a lot of qualities. I had Gradius on my 8bit Nintendo and used to play the other one (Same game as Salamander but iirc with another name.. Lifeforce, perhaps?) with my neighbour.. I always thought Gradius sucked when compared to the other one since you couldn't play co-op in Gradius. v_v

Also: One of my first C64 games:

Has it been 17 years already? One of the greatest PC games of all time: Ultima Underworld: The Stygian Abyss. The first game that made my Amiga 500 feel very very obsolete.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TpuTbxkaZ94
Amazing (pseudo) 3D graphics at the time and this was released before Wolfenstein 3D.

Ultima Underworld 2 was released out of nowhere the next year and was even better
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dUeGl6YDxQw

Year after UU2 the same game studio (Looking Glass) released System Shock.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xap7JLlROSQ
The mind was blown.
The high resolution SVGA (if you can call 640x480 high resolution these days) CD-ROM version is still worth playing. The SVGA version on best settings ran VERY slowly even on the best computers back then.

System Shock 2 was fun but it didn't feel the same anymore. These days the ex Looking Glass people have been involved in games like HL2, Bioshock and Fallout 3.

I feel like submitting a picture of the "container" behind me with the C64 + Cassete Tape + 100+ original games.

But theres a reason they are called classics I guess - we fired it up some time ago with a projector on the livingroom wall. Some of the games in this thread was actually still pretty entertaining.

This was indeed:
