Ok i'm upgrading a 2.4 duel core XP machine currently has a 256 meg gcard and 1 gig of ram does anyone know if these items will work in it? (it's a dell)

The Twin2X2048-6400C4 is a 2048 MByte matched pair of DDR2 SDRAM DIMMs. This part delivers outstanding performance in the latest generation of dual-channel DDR2-based motherboards. It has been tested extensively in multiple DDR2 motherboards to ensure compatibility and performance at its rated speed. This memory has been verified to operate at 800MHz at the low latencies of 4-4-4-12.

And

NVIDIA GeForce 8500GT 512mb

What model Dell is it? The motherboard model is needed to give you a definate answer. Even though the above looks fine, I'd double check with the motherboard first.

Also - in my personal opinion, I wouldn't waste your money on an 8500GT I think you'll be dissapointed with its performance. It depends what you are using at the moment of course, but an nvidia x600 is the least I'd upgrade to with today's games (7600GT, 8600 or 9600 etc) Even better - a 7800GT can be bought for 70 and although that maybe pushing the budget too far will be a DAMN sight faster than a 8500GT.

Took a bit of searching as Dell tends to rename all of its parts to numbers only useful to Dell and noone else. Is your Dell the Dimension E520 model?
If it is, then it will support both of the items you listed (the memory and the Graphics Card - in the PCi x16 slot, not the x4)
You also might need to go into the system bios and tell it you've put 800MHz memory in, because im pretty sure the standard will be 667.

I got some information here:
http://support.euro.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dime520/en/SM_EN/specs.htm#wp1052310

http://support.euro.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dime520/en/SM_EN/techov.htm#wp1060548

The only thing I couldn't find out is how powerful your power supply is, but I reckon it'll have enough to power most graphics cards - you may need to use the spare power connector as mentioned in one of the above links.
As for graphics card performance I did a check on the 3dmark website. It's not the best benchmark program but it was the only one I could find with the results for both the cards you mentioned:

(results with 3dMark 03 all using 1Gb RAM and a Similar Athlon processor)
ATi X1300pro = 6000 points
Nvidia 8500GT = 12000 points
Nvidia 8600GT = 22000 points
Nvidia 78ooGT = 26000 points

So yes, the nvidia 8500GT is better than your ATiX1300, but the 8600GT is much better, and SCAN are currently doing one now for 42 that should work in your Dell

8600 card is deffo worth it, got one 512MB myself and a 256MB for the wife. Be sure to get one with GDDR3 instead of DDR2 (the 256MB GDDR3 is much faster than a 512MB DDR2).

I would also recommend getting one with passive cooling if you are not planning to overclock it.

I purchased the one Carc recommended, being delivered tomorrow, but thanks for the advice Borwin :)
