View Full Version : [UI] Screwing around with Photoshop

12-04-2007, 12:02 PM
So I've aquired a copy of this with the intention of generally messing around with art on my UI using DART (http://www.discordmods.com/cgi-bin/page.pl?mod=DART) and a few brushes I liked.

At the moment im mostly messing with preset brushes and things, seeing as I've only had it for 2 hours; its a little more complicated than MSPaint. What I'd really like to make is something that mostly encompasses the main part of my UI using an oily-like graphic. Think of the graphic that trails you when you have Corruption on you or Shadowform. How do I recreate that? :|

Also general tips would be cool.

You'll find most self taught photoshop wizzes have spent lots of time on tutorial sites just arsing around making random little things. The number of different techniques you can find on that site is really insane, so I suggest you just play around for a few months and then try again. :p

biggest collection of brushes and other things you'll ever likely to need

mm quite - spent a good few years using photoshop now and I still wouldn't consider myself anywhere near good with it - when you see designers swapping .psd files that are 2-3 Gig in size you realise how much power is actually in the program!

With that said, good tutorial sites like the one above make life easier, just a case of hunting one down for the effect your after :) The forums on gfxvoid.com also have some nice tutorials particularly on particle effects.

Nah its not too complicated; I mostly achieved what I wanted. Implementing it into DART is the hard bit. It appears DART only likes files of certain sizes, (power of 2) so I've got to somehow chop it up and import it into DART, then repiece it back together.

Heres what I made; Its overlayed onto a pic of my UI so I could get the scale right, when its done it should be behind it all though.

Outta interest did you get a tutorial sight for how to do that, or if you didn't, can you make a hack and slash one

Urgh well, DART is a mess and didn't like importing files unless they done in a certain way (i have a guide thanks) so I never really got around to sticking the art in game. If I understand it correctly I'd have to chop it into 8 pieces of equal size, import them to DART then re-stitch them back together. I may give it another go now I'm done with my exams as I've seen similar results pop up all of a sudden for different UI's (I told you black bars were out of fashion!). The first can be found in this video (http://www.warcraftmovies.com/download.php?id=39947&mirror=1) by Albis; hes always had a unique UI though, and its really nicely done. The second I stumbled on on the official forums, which in the picture (http://s171.photobucket.com/albums/u286/Noka_2007/?action=view&current=WoWScrnShot_050707_220203.jpg) you can see has similarities to mine.

Like I said I 'll have a go at sometime to redo it, and if it works I may knock up a few more. Theres really nothing special to it, as I said in the OP I just messed with brushes at various opacities to get the shadowy effect.
