I'm sure this has been covered plenty of times before but was hoping for some advice from people as to how to reduce lag.

I log on, and usually within about 20 minutes I'm up to a minimum of 4K lag up to 20K. It takes ages to interact with anything or for spells to work after I have clicked on them or for msgs to come up after I have typed them. This is accompanied by a series of dcs and after about 20 minutes slowly dissipates and I can play freely. However, it comes back every couple of hours and I have to go through the cycle again.

Today's been a particularly bad day and I've heard that there've been some nasty spikes anyway.

Help from people would be much appreciated as it's doing my head in.

P.S. And no, I'm not downloading porn as I play. :P

Run traceroute (or something similar) and see where the bottleneck is. If it's locally (ie, between comp and router) you may have some program periodically "phoning home" and eating up bandwidth, or something that just eats up cpu time and prevents the networking subsystem from processing packets in a timely fashion. If it's on an external machine... well, not too much you can do; if the machine belongs to your ISP you could complain at them I guess.

Yeah, but why would addons only slow it down(And cause random d/cs) for 20 minutes out of every 2 hours or so? Seems like it would be happening all the time if addons were the cause, unless he visits a particular area that triggers extra processing at those times.

Mods like GEM can really mess things up because they send so much data through their default chat channel.
When I was using it with the default channel it caused me to have constant disconnnects and lag.

Might be worth trying to disable any that use a dedicated channel like that.
